Tool & Die Project Receives NAM Grant
The Tool & Die Skill-Based Training & Assessment System
will be released in August 2003. PMA’s Working Solutions has received a
grant from the National Association of Manufacturer’s (NAM) to
complete a performance-based training design and assessment program for tool
& diemakers. The program will set forth a "best practice" training
matrix for diemakers from beginner to master level and include 30 hands-on
performance assessments, a detailed job-task & skills analysis, a
performance achievement record to track individual ability at each level and the
NIMS national skill standards.
This training & assessment program is designed to provide a
national model of critical work functions expected of tool & diemakers;
streamline the training process in order to get more qualified tool &
diemakers into the labor force; enhance the overall perception of diemakeing and
increase the number, availability and retention of skilled tool & diemakers
at all levels of employment; and provide educators/trainers with core job
requirements to develop curriculum, learning materials and OJT programs that
compliment performance expectations defined by industry.
The program will be ideal for in-plant, structured on-the-job
training activities, training managed through educational/technical
institutions, apprenticeships or internships and will provide a systematic and
standardized way to objectively advance and promote employees based on ability.

Working Solutions – Test Development Services
Testing is commonplace in our society. We test people in order to drive a
car, operate certain machinery, fly an airplane, get into a school, and get a
job or advance within a profession. From Certified Public Accountants to
licensed electricians, testing people is everywhere and necessary when deciding
what "proof" is needed that a person can perform to required
standards. In industry we call these tests "assessments."
Brought to you by the PMA Educational Foundation, Working
Solutions offers assessment design, development and validation services to
manufacturers, technical education/apprentice programs and trade associations.
Working with job experts, assessments are developed to meet the specific needs,
goals and intent of your testing program. Assessments are validated for job
relatedness, effectiveness and defensibility (from a legal perspective).
Many options exist to measure competency. Written exams can be used to test
for applied knowledge and contextual skills. Interviews can be used to assess
experience and critical work behaviors. Work samples demonstrate ability to
produce a desired product. Performance assessments evaluate the process used and
the product attained. Since some "tests" involve compensation, EEO
development guidelines apply concerning validity, reliability, adverse impact
and confidentiality. To develop assessments, a systematic approach is used to
avoid arbitrary or capricious decision-making and non-empirical content.
