TRAINING DESIGNS
Skill-Based Training Designs & Learning Progressions
The PACE Study is a process that shows "what is." The Skill-Based Progression (SBP) is the product of what "will or should be." The Skill-Based Progression is a blueprint of standards describing basic, intermediate and advanced/mastery levels of competencies that employees must have to perform at defined levels of ability, called Skill Blocks. It is based on current need, future need, technology changes or new work redesign efforts (i.e., incumbent training, multi-skill/pay-for-skill programs, self-directed work teams, worker certifications, etc.). It sets forth a "best practice" sequence of training and educational activities within each Skill Block, and illustrates the method through which those skills will be demonstrated, tested and assessed.
Once a PACE Study is completed, the Skill-Based Progression is determined by a panel of your expert workers and supervisors meeting in a one-day meeting. It is designed to reflect core work expectations for each technical Skill Block.
WorkingSolutions uses a competency-based training approach to career development. As compared with an "educational" approach to learning, competency-based training focuses on the learner's ability to use skills and knowledge to perform key work activities with the proficiency required for success on the job.
This approach assists in determining:
- What do apprentices or workers have to do or know in order to be successful at each Skill Block level of the learning progression?
- What evidence will be accepted that a candidate has demonstrated requisite skills and knowledge to meet the standards at each level?
- What kinds of learning opportunities provide the skills, knowledge and know-how at each level?
- How to build internal capability and initiate quality control measures to sustain, grow and update ongoing training and assessment efforts?
Stages of the SBP Workshop
- Validation of the PACE Study (Job-Task & Skill Analyses)
- Identify "core" work activities and place those critical tasks into the applicable Skill Block representing a specific level of ability.
- Order Work Activities within each Skill Block to depict a logical, "best practice" sequence (or progression) of learning.
- Develop a Table of Assessment Specifications.
- Identify those assessments within each Skill Block progression.
